Presentation of Anne Scheinberg's dissertation

PhD for Anne Scheinberg

Anne Scheinberg has analysed four cities

  • Rotterdam, Netherlands
  • Varna, Bulgaria
  • Bamako, Mali
  • Tompkins County, USA
Her work at WASTE and the experiences from projects managed by other colleagues and input from WASTE partners have contributed to her research for the dissertation.
As written in the introduction of her dissertation, the goals of her research were:
  • To address the question what is waste and what is to be done about that.
  • To support and enricht practice of practitioners with ideas and insights from social theory

Conclusions of her research are that there are similarities in the processes around waste management in the selected cities, but there are some clear differences as well, which can be pin-pointed on the prics of waste disposal. While cities in the north can afford to have an expensive waste management system, for cities in the south it is important to keep the costs low and therefor successful waste management can only be achieved by institutionalising private valorisation activities, so-called inclusive recycling.

The dissertation is an interesting read for waste management experts who wish to learn more on practical insights on urban waste management around the world.

WASTE is proud of Anne's accomplishment and wishes to congratulate her with this.
