SCOPE is an NGO based in Tiruchi, established in 1986 concentrates on rural development, empowering the marginalized women in rural areas found out soon that open defecation due to inability to construct toilets was one of the basic problems that prevented their economic development. Increased income was always eroded by increased medical bill, and fall in income due to increased absenteeism. SCOPE then concentrated building toilets with the help of State Government TSC, and other agencies, and built over 15,000 pit pour and flush pit latrines.
It then faced another major problem on several villages on the banks of the river Cauvery and its irrigation canals, where the water table was high, the pit latrines collapsed and people desirous of cost effective latrines were forced to resort to open defecation.
After discussions with various experts, SCOPE designed an ECOSAN Compost Toilet in its training centre at Thanneerpandal. As it functioning very well, residents of Kaliyapalayam and later Sevanthilingapuram with water logging problems and in hilly and water starved rocky regions of Erode district constructed the ECOSAN compost toilets.
Since then SCOPE has been concentrating on ECOSAN compost toilets design and construction, which also helped recovery of precious urine and feaces for improving farm production and preventing water contamination and saving of precious water.
