Alliances in Urban Waste Management
S. Grafakos, I.S.A. Baud, A. vd. Klundert (ed.) (2001)
A joint effort of University of Amsterdam and WASTE has resulted in the Working Document 14, Alliances in Urban Environmental Management, A process analysis for indicators and contribution to sustainable development in urban solid waste management. It combines the expertise in the UWEP programme and the UvA (University of Amsterdam) research programme on livelihoods and urban solid waste management system. Stelios Grafakos has made a comparative analysis of the alliances or so-called linkages existing between actors in urban solid waste management in various locations. Linkages between these actors are of vital importance for the running of the waste management system. UWEP research findings from Manizales and Medellin (Colombia), Hanoi (Vietnam), Manila, Quezon City and Puerto Princesa (the Philippines) were combined with research findings from cases studied by the University of Amsterdam.
Alliances were distinguished, objectives for sustainable alliances were developed together with indicators to measure this sustainability. Furthermore, these objectives were set against the different levels in waste management: the policy/legislative, the organisational, the technical and the performance level.
