Municipal Solid Waste Management for Secondary Cities | Zero-Plastic Waste

Partners WASTE, FINISH Society

Municipal solid waste (MSW) continues to be a severe problem in India. Increasing quantities of waste are becoming increasingly complex with new types of waste, such as the fast growing quantity of plastics. Along the entire service and value chain, from the collection of waste to its final disposal, many Indian cities are struggling to implement an affordable and sustainable model. In 2018, FINISH Society won a contract with the Udaipur Municipal Corporation (UMC) to implement door to door collection of segregated waste (dry waste and wet waste) and to transport the waste to a designated material recovery facility for sorting and composting.

Udaipur was the first city selected by WASTE to be included in our FINILOOP programme. FINILOOP partners with cities to reduce, redesign and improve management of plastics. Through an integrated model, FINILOOP is addressing inadequate waste management in cities focusing on plastic pollution. This report shows the findings of a rapid assessment of the Udaipur solid waste management system implemented by our partner, FINISH Society, and aims to show replicable solutions in solid waste management for secondary cities.
