Organic Waste - Options for small-scale resource recovery

I. Lardinois, A. v.d. Klundert (TOOL/WASTE) (1993)

This is the first publication in the Urban Waste Series. The book deals with the importance of organic waste recovery in urban waste management. The book is derived from data presented in six local research reports detailing organic waste recovery in Accra, Bamako, Cairo, Calcutta, Manila and Nairobi.

The main focus of the book is on low-cost, labour-intensive options for the recovery of urban organic waste and the generation of useful end products e.g. soil conditioners and biogas. Activities discussed include animal raising, composting and co-composting, anaerobic digestion and the production of biomass briquettes.

The aim of the discussion is to present possible employment and income generation opportunities for micro-entrepreneurs and communities in low-income urban areas. The book also deals with government policies, health and environmental issues, end product marketability, and the financial and economic aspects that may affect the potential for success of these opportunities.
