Collection of Household Excreta - the operation of services in urban low-income neighbourhoods
Maria S. Muller (ed.) (1996)
Collection and disposal of human excreta are a serious sanitation problem in low-income urban settlements and unplanned areas of cities in developing countries. Pit and bucket latrines are a common sanitation facility in many parts of African and Asian cities. Without careful operation and maintenance these latrines pose a serious risk to public health.
The publication includes an extensive literature review on the planning and construction of pit and bucket latrines. In addition, four case studies are presented looking at how these latrines work in practice. Cases are taken from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, Ghaziabad in India, Accra in Ghana and Yichang in China. These case studies discuss the technology used, the method of disposal of the collected sludge and nightsoil and its organization and place within the urban waste management system. They point to the institutional linkages required to ensure the successful operation and maintenance of these latrines.
