The Organic Waste Flow in Integrated Sustainable Waste Management

N. Dulac, A. Scheinberg (Ed) (2001)

This book is part of the series Integrated Sustainable Waste Management - A Set of Five Tools for Decision-makers - Experiences from the Urban Waste Expertise Programme (1995 - 2001).

It is designed to assist in identifying and understanding the role that organic waste treatment and specifically composting can play in ISWM systems. While there are recovery and recycling systems in place in most developing countries, the organic waste stream remains the largest component of the waste and the one that has the least chance of being recovered without an intervention

This document is directed to municipal managers who:

  • Want to incorporate composting in their SWM system but don’t know how.
  • Are looking for first hand information on composting approaches used in the South.
  • Would like an overview of technical, economical and marketing aspects of composting.
  • Is willing to support initiatives by other stakeholders if this is the most appropriate approach.
  • Is seeking to improve human and environmental health.
  • Is actively involved in composting and wants to optimize his/her current practice, based on low-cost composting technologies.
