Wasted Agriculture, the use of compost in urban agriculture

D. 't Hart, J. Pluimers (1995)

With growing populations and an increasingly Western lifestyle many municipal governments in low- and middle-income countries are dealing with burgeoning amounts of urban waste. Governments are generally only able to collect a fraction of this waste and as a result a significant proportion is left to litter the streets, fill streams and ditches or is dumped on open ground. In most of these countries the percentage of organic waste in the waste is high and could be converted to compost.

This working document looks at how compost produced from urban waste is used in urban agriculture and generates new ideas for further developing this strategy for turning urban waste into food. This study hopes to stimulate people working for CBOs, NGOs, governments and research institutes to explore the possibilities of using compost from urban waste in urban agriculture.
